We are committed to a musical future
In probably no other region of Germany or Europe has political and cultural history been so rich in facets, but also so deeply divided, as in central Germany. Individuals with the ability to carry out struggles within theirselves and build bridges were and remain rare. Not only in this respect, but throughout Europe and beyond, Franz Liszt was a central figure in recent music history.
The German Liszt Society was founded in 1990 by a group of individuals who, long before the political upheaval of 1989, were able to reunite East and West German cultural history in the heart of Europe during the deepest and longest division in German history. Hardly any other composer in recent music history offered as many intercultural points of contact as Franz Liszt. Furthermore, Liszt can be considered the founder of a modern intercultural music philosophy that is highly relevant today.
In cooperation with the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, the Neue Liszt-Stiftung, and the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar, and others, the German Liszt Society builds bridges between amateurs and professionals from various fields; thus creating connections between institutions around the world that are committed to intercultural understanding.
Members of the German Liszt Society have initiated the Liszt Biennale, the Liszt Academy in Schillingsfuerst Castle, the Soirees in the »Altenburg«, and the Weimar Liszt Days, which are particularly popular with younger generations of artists, music lovers, cultural philosophers, and scholars.
The German Liszt Society supports the purchase of important Liszt manuscripts by the Goethe and Schiller Archive, which belongs to the Klassik Stiftung Weimar and houses the world's most extensive collection of Liszt manuscripts.
The German Liszt Society is funded exclusively by its members, whom it actively recruits. Liszt's works and writings are to be promoted in four areas:
- Liszt and Modernism
- Liszt and Tradition
- Liszt Intercultural
- Liszt Intermedial
Under the title »Forum Liszt«, a member magazine is also offered, which is a place for exchange and information.
The German Liszt Society would like to work with all interested parties to continue Liszt's work into a shared future, true to Liszt's approach to musical continuation, which was able to weave such a multifaceted and profound network into the past and future realms of human nature and culture.
